Because of their special medical needs, not many veterinarians treat exotic pets. Here at Olathe Animal Hospital, we receive referrals from all over the Kansas City area for treatment of exotic pets. These include pet birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, snakes, lizards, turtles, rabbits, and pocket pets. For safety reasons, we do not treat venomous snakes or primates.
It takes additional training and education to effectively treat illnesses in these pets, but we know how special these pets can be to their owners and families. Our hospital has equipment and medications specific to these types of pets. Care handouts are available to educate you on the special needs of your particular pet.
When you purchase a new exotic pet, you should bring it in for an exam as soon as possible. Our veterinarians will examine your new pet and give you information regarding dietary needs, housing requirements, and other husbandry issues. One of the most common problems we see in exotic pets are illnesses related to improper diet or housing. Getting your pet off to a good start with proper diet and other needs related to their specific species will insure a healthy, happy pet.
